What furniture is worth at auction
The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.
- Maker and label
- A labelled piece by François Linke, Baker, Henredon, Herman Miller, Knoll, or Stickley is a known quantity. Check the back, the underside of drawers, and inside the carcass for labels and stamps before you send photographs.
- Period or style
- "Louis XV" describes a style that has been made continuously for two hundred years. Whether a piece is period, nineteenth-century, or a twentieth-century interpretation is usually the largest single factor in its price.
- Original surface and hardware
- Original finish, original mounts, and original glass are worth protecting. Stripping and refinishing an antique commonly removes a large part of its value, and it cannot be put back.
- Scale and usability
- Pieces that fit modern rooms sell best. Very large case furniture is the hardest part of this category, and enormous armoires and breakfronts sell below what their quality suggests.
Frequently asked about furniture
Is brown furniture still selling?
Yes, but selectively. Quality, maker, and scale carry the market — good period pieces and well-made designer furniture sell readily, while large-scale reproduction case goods are soft.
Should I refinish before consigning?
No. This is the most costly mistake we see in this category. Original surface is part of what a buyer is paying for, and refinishing frequently removes more value than the improvement in appearance adds.
Do you take mid-century modern?
Yes, and it is one of the stronger parts of this department. Documented pieces by Eames, Knoll, Saarinen, Paul Evans, and their contemporaries do well in our sales.
