What texas artists is worth at auction
The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.
- Which Texas artist
- The regional market is deep but specific. Porfirio Salinas, G. Harvey, Dalhart Windberg, and Robert Wood have long, consistent records here; many capable Texas painters have almost none.
- Subject
- Bluebonnet and Hill Country landscapes are what the Texas market buys. The same artist's portrait or still life typically brings a fraction of the landscape price.
- Original versus reproduction
- Dalhart Windberg in particular is widely reproduced, and printed reproductions turn up constantly in estates. An original on canvas and a signed print are different objects at very different prices.
- Size and date
- Larger canvases from an artist's strongest period generally lead. For Salinas, mid-career Hill Country work is the core of the market.
Frequently asked about texas artists
How do I tell a Windberg original from a print?
Look at the surface at an angle and under magnification. A print shows a regular dot or fibre pattern and a flat surface; an original shows brush texture. If you are unsure, photograph the surface raking in side light and send it to us.
Are bluebonnet paintings by unknown artists worth selling?
Often yes, though at decorative rather than collector prices. Texas landscape sells steadily here regardless of signature, and unattributed work still finds buyers in our sales.
Do you sell Texas artists outside Texas?
Yes. Our sales are bid live in the gallery and online worldwide, and Texas regional painting draws national interest, but the strongest bidding for this material is still in-state.
