What jewelry is worth at auction

The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.

The centre stone
For a diamond, cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight set the number, and the difference between adjacent grades is real money. Coloured stones turn on origin and treatment — an unheated Burmese ruby is a different object from a heated one.
Signed or unsigned
A signed Tiffany, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, or Bvlgari piece carries a premium well beyond its materials. The signature and any serial numbers matter, so photograph the marks.
Metal and weight
Karat and gross weight set the floor under any piece. That floor is what an unsigned, stone-free item is worth, and it moves with the metals markets.
Period and condition
Original Art Deco and Retro pieces are sought after in their own right. Later resizing, replaced stones, and worn mountings all pull against that.

Frequently asked about jewelry

Is my jewelry worth more than its scrap value?

Sometimes, and the difference can be very large. Signed pieces, period pieces, and anything with a good centre stone are worth considerably more intact than melted. That is exactly what a preliminary evaluation is for, and it costs nothing.

Do I need a GIA report before consigning?

Not to get an evaluation. For a significant diamond, a current report usually pays for itself in bidder confidence, and we will tell you when a piece is worth certifying before it is catalogued.

Will you sell costume jewelry?

Yes, generally grouped into lots. Signed costume — Miriam Haskell, Trifari, and similar — is catalogued separately when the quality supports it.
