What We Sell

Porcelain & Ceramics at Auction

Porcelain and ceramics run from the finest European and Asian porcelain - Meissen, Sèvres, Royal Copenhagen, and Herend - through American art pottery by makers like Rookwood, prized for their glazes and rare patterns. Value swings widely on maker, mark, and condition, and reproductions are common among art pottery, so correct identification is everything. Austin Auction Gallery sells and evaluates porcelain, ceramics, and art pottery; browse the makers below to learn what yours may be worth.

What porcelain & ceramics is worth at auction

The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.

Factory and mark
Meissen, Sèvres, Herend, Royal Copenhagen, and the strong English factories each have their own market. Marks changed over time and are datable, which is why a clear photograph of the base is the most useful thing you can send.
Condition
Ceramics are brittle and this category is unforgiving. Hairlines, rim flakes, restored fingers on figures, and replaced finials all carry, and damage should be disclosed rather than discovered.
Completeness for services
A dinner service is priced on how complete and usable it is. Large services by a strong factory sell well; a partial set of a common pattern is a decorative lot.
Modelling and decoration
Within one factory, finely modelled figural groups and hand-painted work sell far above transfer-printed tableware of the same age.

Frequently asked about porcelain & ceramics

Does a chip destroy the value?

Rarely destroys, usually reduces. On a common decorative piece a chip can be most of the value; on a scarce early piece collectors accept honest damage. Photograph it and let us judge.

Are large dinner services still selling?

Yes, though the market favours the recognised factories and complete sets. Versace for Rosenthal and Chinese export services have both done well in our sales.

Should I have a repair done first?

No. Poor restoration is harder to sell than honest damage, and good restoration rarely repays its cost at auction. Send it as it is.
