Maker, model, and variation

Within one Colt or Winchester model, a scarce variation can be worth several times a standard example. Serial number, barrel markings, and configuration are what establish which one you have.

Originality

Matching numbers, original finish, original stocks, and correct sights. Refinishing a collectible firearm typically removes a substantial part of its value, and reblue is readily identified.

Condition

Graded on remaining original finish, bore, mechanical function, and wood. The difference between a good and an excellent example of the same scarce model is often very large.

Documentation and accessories

Factory letters, original boxes, cased sets, and documented history all add. So does anything establishing a martial or presentation history.
