What clocks is worth at auction
The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.
- Maker and movement
- The movement is the clock. A signed movement by a known maker carries the piece, and the signature is usually on the backplate or dial rather than anywhere visible on the case.
- Case quality and material
- French Empire bronze-and-marble, carved Black Forest, and good longcase examples in figured woods all sell above ordinary cases of the same period.
- Originality and completeness
- Original dial, hands, pendulum, weights, and keys. A replaced movement in an old case is a much less desirable object, and matching garnitures should stay with their clock.
- Running condition
- A clock that runs and strikes correctly presents better, though a good clock needing service still sells well when described accurately.
Frequently asked about clocks
Does my clock need to be running to consign it?
No. Many clocks come to us needing service and sell perfectly well. We describe mechanical condition accurately rather than requiring you to repair it first.
Are longcase and grandfather clocks still selling?
Yes, though the market favours quality and moderate height. Good eighteenth- and nineteenth-century examples with original movements sell; large reproduction cases are soft.
Should I send the weights, pendulum, and key?
Always, and pack them separately from the case. Original weights and pendulums are specific to a clock, and missing ones are difficult and expensive to replace.
