Bronzes & Sculpture at Auction

Bronze and carved sculpture is one of our deepest departments - patinated and gilt bronzes, carved marble and stone figures, and monumental works ranging from Continental ateliers to Texas modernists like Charles Umlauf and Bob 'Daddy-O' Wade. Value turns on the artist, foundry mark, size, and patina. Austin Auction Gallery sells and evaluates sculpture and bronzes; learn what yours may be worth.

What bronzes & sculpture is worth at auction

The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.

Artist and foundry
The sculptor's name leads, and the foundry mark supports it. Foundry stamps, edition numbers, and copyright marks are usually on the base or the back of the plinth, and they are worth photographing carefully.
Lifetime or later cast
A bronze cast during the artist's lifetime under their supervision is a different object from a later or posthumous cast of the same model, and the price difference is substantial.
Patina
Original patina is part of the work. Stripping, repatination, and outdoor corrosion all pull against value; an untouched surface is worth protecting.
Size and model
Within one artist's output, the monumental and the best-known models lead. Charles Umlauf and the animalier bronzes both follow that pattern here.

Frequently asked about bronzes & sculpture

How can I tell a period cast from a later one?

Casting technique, chasing quality, patina, foundry marks, and weight all contribute, and it usually takes handling to be sure. Photograph every mark on the base and let our specialists look.

Is a signature on a bronze reliable?

Less than you would hope. Signatures are cast in and can be copied along with the model. It is one piece of evidence among several rather than proof.

Do you sell marble and stone sculpture?

Yes — carved marble, alabaster, and cast stone garden sculpture are all regular parts of this department.
