- Material and construction
- Carved stone, lead, and good cast iron sit above later cast concrete and reconstituted stone. Weight and construction usually make the distinction obvious in person.
- Scale and presence
- This is one category where large is genuinely better. Monumental gates, gazebos, fountains, and large urns anchor a landscape, and they consistently lead this department.
- Weathering
- Honest weathering and lichen are assets here, not defects — they are difficult to fake convincingly and buyers pay for them. Do not pressure-wash a weathered stone piece.
- Pairs and matched sets
- Pairs of urns, gates, and benches are worth disproportionately more than singles, because they resolve a symmetrical setting.
Frequently asked about garden & architectural
Should I clean the moss and weathering off first?
No. Patina and lichen on stone and lead are part of the appeal and take decades to develop. Cleaning them off reduces value and cannot be undone.
Can you handle very heavy stone and iron pieces?
Scale is not a barrier for catalogued sales. For qualified estates we coordinate professional packing and transport, and property is insured while it is in our possession.
Is architectural salvage sellable on its own?
Yes. Mantels, overdoors, gates, and ironwork removed from buildings sell steadily, and anything you know about which building it came from is worth telling us.
