What fine art is worth at auction

The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.

The artist's auction record
More than any other factor. A signed work by an artist with an established record will outperform a better painting by an unrecorded hand, and the gap is usually large.
Original or multiple
An oil or watercolour is a unique object. A signed lithograph, serigraph, or giclée is one of an edition, and edition size sets the ceiling — this is the single most common surprise for consignors.
Subject and period
Within one artist's output, the desirable subjects carry a premium. Texas landscape painters are worth more in bluebonnets than in still life; that is a market preference, not a judgement of the painting.
Condition and restoration
Lining, overpaint, and tears reduce value, but disclosed restoration is far better than a surprise under ultraviolet light. Do not attempt to clean a painting before an evaluation.

Frequently asked about fine art

Does a signature guarantee my painting is authentic?

No. Signatures are the easiest element to add, and the more sought-after the artist, the more often it happens. Our specialists look at the whole object — support, ground, technique, stretcher, labels — and a signature is one piece of that.

Is a signed print worth much?

It depends almost entirely on edition size and the artist. A signed print from an edition of 250 by a well-traded artist can be worth real money; one from an open edition usually is not. Send a photo of the margin where the edition is numbered.

Should I have the frame restored first?

No. Frames rarely repay restoration at auction, and an original period frame is often worth more untouched than refinished. Send it as it is.
