Overview & history
Born Pietro Enrico Hoffman Landsberg in Florence, Italy in 1936 to German-Jewish parents fleeing the rise of Nazism, Pedro Friedeberg moved to Mexico City as a young child and became one of the most distinctive figures in 20th-century Mexican art. He trained briefly as an architect before turning to art under the mentorship of the émigré artist Mathias Goeritz, developing a hyper-detailed style filled with geometric patterns, optical motifs, and ancient and religious symbolism. Introduced by the painter Remedios Varo to Mexico City's surrealist circle - which included Leonora Carrington and Alice Rahon - Friedeberg held his first exhibition in 1960 and joined the Dadaist-minded group Los Hartos in 1961. His best-known creation is the "Hand-Chair" of 1962, a sculptural seat in the form of a hand that became an icon of modern design and has been endlessly imitated. Across a seven-decade career he produced paintings, works on paper, and designed furniture and objects, all marked by obsessive detail and playful wit. Friedeberg died in 2026 at age 90; his work remains highly sought after by collectors of Mexican modernism and surrealism.
