What rugs & tapestries is worth at auction
The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.
- Origin and weave
- Where and how a rug was woven sets its category. Heriz, Serapi, Oushak, Tabriz, Kashan, and Sarouk each carry their own market, and knot count and structure are how a specialist places a rug.
- Age and dyes
- Pre-1930 rugs with natural dyes are the collected end of the market. Natural dyes age into softened, varied tones; early synthetic dyes fade harshly and are readily identified.
- Condition
- Even wear is tolerated far better than localised damage. Low pile across a whole rug is normal for age; holes, moth damage, dry rot, and crude reweaves are what suppress the price.
- Size and format
- Room-sized carpets and long runners in usable dimensions are what decorators buy, and they consistently outperform small mats of equal quality.

My rug is worn. Is it still worth selling?
Very likely. Antique rugs are expected to show wear, and honest even wear on a good old rug is not a barrier — collectors often prefer it to a stiff new one.
Should I have a rug cleaned or repaired first?
Cleaning by a rug specialist is usually worthwhile. Repair generally is not — it rarely returns its cost, and a bad reweave is worse than an honest hole.
