What coins is worth at auction
The factors below are listed most decisive first. A preliminary evaluation costs nothing — send photographs and our specialists will tell you where yours sits.
- Metal content versus numismatic premium
- Most modern bullion — American Gold Eagles, Buffalos, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs — tracks the metal price with a modest premium. Rare dates and high grades trade well above metal, and telling the two apart is the whole exercise.
- Grade
- On a scarce coin, one or two points of grade can double the price. On common bullion it barely registers.
- Date and mintmark
- Mintmark and date decide scarcity within a series, most visibly on Morgan and Peace dollars, where common and key dates of identical appearance are worth very different sums.
- Certification
- Coins graded by a recognised service sell more confidently, particularly at higher values, because the buyer does not have to take grade on trust.

For most bullion and circulated material, no — the cost outweighs the gain. For a coin that may be scarce or high grade, it often pays. Show us first and we will tell you which yours are.
Should I clean my coins?
No, under any circumstances. Cleaning is immediately detectable, permanently reduces value, and is one of the most common ways collectors lose money before a sale.
