About the Artist
Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, Spain in 1904 and became the most flamboyant and recognizable figure of the Surrealist movement, famous for dreamlike imagery, melting clocks, and a relentless gift for self-promotion. While his original oil paintings are largely in museums and rarely come to market, Dalí was enormously prolific in prints, lithographs, etchings, and sculpture, and these are what most often appear at auction. His graphic work spans illustrated literary suites, religious and mythological subjects, and surrealist fantasies, produced over decades and in many editions. The market for Dalí prints is large but complicated: because of his fame, his graphics are among the most heavily forged in the art world, and unauthorized and questionable editions abound. Authentication, edition, and condition are therefore critical to value. Genuine, well-documented Dalí prints and sculptures remain widely collected, and original paintings - when they do appear - command extraordinary prices. Austin Auction Gallery evaluates Dalí works with careful attention to edition and authenticity.
Authenticated signed prints and lithographs $500-$5,000; sculptures and rare graphics higher; original paintings far higher (rare at auction).
