About the Artist
Leonardo Nierman Mendelejis was born in Mexico City in 1932, the only child of Jewish immigrants from Lithuania and Ukraine. He first trained as a violinist and earned a business degree before turning, self-taught, to painting - and his musical sensibility shaped everything that followed, as he sought to translate the movement and harmony of composers like Bach and Debussy into color and form. Nierman became known for radiant, abstract canvases evoking elemental forces - flames, storms, waterfalls, and cosmic light - rendered in brilliant color and dynamic motion, drawing on influences from Siqueiros to Kandinsky and Miró. He worked in painting, sculpture, and tapestry, and his prolific output earned him dozens of honors and a wide international following. His work is held in the collections of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among others. Nierman died in 2023, and his vivid paintings remain popular with collectors of modern Latin American art.
Most paintings $400-$2,500; larger and finer works higher.
