Robert Wood

Robert William Wood was born in Sandgate, Kent, England, in 1889 and emigrated to the United States as a young man, eventually making his career as a professional landscape painter in Texas and California. He became one of the most recognizable American artists of the mid-twentieth century — not through galleries or museums alone, but through the sheer reach of his romantic, accessible landscapes, which were reproduced by the millions and hung in homes across the country. Wood is best remembered in Texas for his bluebonnet scenes — canvases radiant with the blues and purples of the Hill Country in spring, painted with a warm, luminous touch that captures the Texas countryside at its most inviting. He also painted extensively along the California coast and throughout the American countryside, bringing the same romantic sensibility to Pacific cliffs, mountain meadows, and New England autumn. His originals have always been distinct from the countless reproductions of his work and are genuinely collected, particularly in Texas where his bluebonnet subjects carry strong sentimental and regional appeal. Wood died in 1979, and his original oils — especially his finest Hill Country and bluebonnet subjects — remain actively sought after by Texas collectors.
