About the Artist
Dalhart Windberg was born in Goliad County, Texas, in 1933, and named for the popular entertainer Vernon Dalhart. He first learned to mix colors from a nun at Immaculate Conception Catholic School and later studied under the Texas painter Simon Michael. After a tour of duty in Europe with the army, he turned to painting full-time in 1967. Determined to achieve the smooth, luminous surfaces of the old masters, Windberg developed a signature method of preparing his panels with diluted modeling paste — a technique that gives his landscapes their distinctive polish and depth. He paints romantic, light-filled scenes of Texas, Mexico, Spain, and Greece, from Hill Country bluebonnet fields to moonlit ponds and misty woodlands. Named Texas State Artist and the sole artist of the American Masters Foundation, Windberg has been the subject of two biographies, including Dalhart Windberg: Artist of Texas, published by the University of Texas Press in 1984. He continues to paint alongside his sons Michael and Richard at the Windberg Art Center in Georgetown. Original Windberg oils are especially prized — an important distinction for collectors, since the artist also produced many signed prints.
