French black slate and patinated bronze mantel clock, late 19th c., figural topper depicting a classically dressed woman holding an open book, over case with inset green marble accents, white enamel dial with Roman numeral hour markers, marked Lay and Cherfils, Paris, time-and-strike movement marked Japy Freres, rising on stepped base with gilt metal trim, ending on scrolled feet, accompanied by pendulum and key, bell and striker operational, operational status of movement unknown, typical small chips to slate at upper edges, two small drilled holes to front of base near feet, approx 16"h, 23.25"w, 7.5"d, 47lbs Provenance: From the estate of Carl Carter (Texas, 1955-2023)
