Large Chinese carved hardwood figure, depicting the Buddha standing in the Varada mudra, in a parcel gilt and polychromed gesso finish, with hair arranged in tight curls, elongated earlobes and downcast eyes, wearing loosely draped robes, rising on integral double lotus platform base, further raised on ebonized platform, figure: approx 59"h, 15"w, 11.5"d, overall on stand: approx 64"h, 18"w, 18"d Provenance: From Donald and Renate Van Stone's Austin, Texas estate. Donald Van Stone served as the Regional Vice President of the First National Bank of Chicago from 1971-1984, a time in which the bank was expanding internationally. After assignments in Germany, Kenya, and Australia, the Van Stones moved to Manila, Philippines where they began amassing an impressive collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian art and artifacts, some of which will be offered in this auction.
