Lot description

Patinated bronze maquette sculpture, "Philosopher's Rock," signed in cast G. Goodacre (Glenna Maxey Goodacre, New Mexico, Texas, 1939-2020), numbered A.P. (artist's proof), with crown-form foundry mark, approx 11.5"h, 12"w, 9"d, 38.25lbs Note: This bronze is a maquette of the large public work located at the entrance to Barton Springs in Austin, Texas. It depicts naturalist Roy Bedichek (Illinois, Texas, 1878-1959), folklorist J. Frank Dobie (Texas, 1888-1964), and historian Walter Prescott Webb (Texas, 1888-1963) seated on a limestone shelf at the edge of Barton Springs, their favorite place for intellectual discussions. Completed by Capital Area Statues in 1994, the full-sized sculpture was partially funded by public donors, who received maquettes for reaching a certain contribution tier. Glenna Maxey Goodacre's iconic work represents the distinct cultural and natural environment of the state capital. Provenance: from a local Austin estate
