Lot description
U.S. Model 1861 Percussion Signal Pistol marked on the left side "USNYW" (United States Navy Yard Washington) over J.A.D. (John A. Dahlgren, U.S. Chief, Bureau of Ordnance) over "1863", the likely serial number at front left below the percussion nipple "9" and to the left of the hammer screw "9", brass with visible steel trigger, hammer and shell lock/release lever, this signal gun employed a Coston flare held in the barrel by the lock/release lever, the flare was activated by firing the percussion cap and holding the pistol aloft, the flare remained in the barrel and emitted a color light, dents, hammer will not hold in cock position, shell lock/release will not stay in closed position, trigger seems good, for shipping 5.5" x 9.5" x 2", 1.80lbs (235) *Provenance: Collection of Billy Wayne Dickey, USN, (Texas, 1936-2022)
