U.S. Stampless cover addressed to General Henry Knox, Secretary of War, Philadelphia, date lined from Richmond (Virginia), August 12, 1792, signed E. Carrington (Edward Carrington) regarding the delivery of one thousand dollars for the U.S. treasury Note 1: Henry Knox (Boston, 1750-1806) served as a senior general in the Continental Army and later in the U.S. Army. He was a participant in battles from Bunker Hill to Yorktown. Knox was a close friend of George Washington who appointed him Secretary of War (1789-1794). Knox was the second Secretary of War under the Congress of the Confederation (Articles of Confederation) and the first under the U.S. Constitution. Note 2: Edward Carrington (Virginia, 1748-1810), attained the rank of Lt. Col. during the Revolutionary War and participated in a number of battles and was second in command of Harrison's Artillery Regiment. He was a Virginia delegate to the Continental Congress, served as the first U.S. Marshal of Virginia.
