Overview & history
Founded in New York in 1875, Bulova became one of America's most prolific watchmakers, famous for the 1960 Accutron - the first electronic watch, driven by a humming tuning fork - as well as Art Deco diamond watches and an enormous range of gold-filled and solid-gold dress watches. Most Bulovas are affordable and widely traded, but solid-gold cases, early Accutron 'Spaceview' models that expose the movement, and fine Art Deco diamond pieces are the ones collectors seek. A date code stamped on the caseback pinpoints the year.
Identifying & marks
Look for 'Bulova' on the dial and movement and a date code on the caseback (a symbol or letter-plus-number that gives the year); Accutron models are marked as such. Check for solid gold (10k/14k) versus gold-filled, which affects value substantially.
