Belgian Postwar glazed ceramic relief sculpture, Abstract Figural Group, designed by Rogier Vandeweghe (Belgian, 1923-2020) for Perignem, mid 20th c., obscured inscription verso "Memorial Day, 26.5.1974, Baugnez - Beverce," inscription not apparent to the naked eye, visible under ultraviolet light, retaining adhesive label inscribed "Reproduction d'Art Werner Nemetz, Malmedy," glue repair near upper right corner, approx 19"h, 11 5/8"w, 7lbs Note: According to the consignor, this piece was presented as a token of esteem to the United States Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge at the Malmedy Massacre Memorial Wall on the thirtieth anniversary memorial of the event. The Malmedy massacre was a German war crime committed at Baugnez, municipality of Malmedy, Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. German soldiers killed eighty-four United States Army prisoners of war who surrendered after a brief military encounter. The Belgian people constructed a memorial wall to honor the fallen Americans after the war.
