Lot description
U.S. Model 1842 Percussion Musket, Springfield Armory, 1846, iron mountings, 42" round barrel, .69 caliber, ramrod, bayonet lug on barrel underside near muzzle, three barrel bands, the center band with a sling loop, the barrel marked at left rear with worn "V, P and eagle head", the lockplate with eagle over U.S. in front of hammer and marked behind hammer on three lines "Spring, Field, 1846", the trigger guard with a sling loop, the steel butt plate is marked "70" at upper tang (likely rack number), the stock with expected dents and scratches, a surface crack behind the barrel tang, the action is good with the hammer having half and full cock and is responsive to the trigger pull, the smooth bore with surface rust, overall approx. 57.5"l, 8.65lbs
