Framed black chalk on paper drawing, "Victimaire," signed lower right J. Lips (Johann Heinrich Lips, Swiss, 1758-1817), dated October 6, 1806, after Jean-Jacques-Francois Le Barbier, called Le Barbier l'Aine (French, 1738-1826), sheet: approx 23.25"h, 16.25"w, overall: 27"h, 20"w, 7lbs Note: a similar composition, Jean-Jacques-Francois Le Barbier, Sotheby's New York, January 27, 2010, Old Master Drawings, Lot 136. Johann Heinrich Lips worked closely with prominent German and Swiss intellectuals, including Johann Kaspar Lavater (1741-1801) and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). His portrait as a young man is included in Lavater's physiognomic studies.
