Carved hardwood Bahau-Busang hawat/ ceremonial baby carrier, Dayak people, Indonesian Borneo, pierced semicircular shape with carved mask of the lightning god Udu, flanked by anthropomorphic 'Aso' spirit guardians with protruding stomachs, accented by bone and beaded inlay, woven rattan trim and dual straps at sides, top handle strung in twine and hung with bone tusks and stone medallions, approx 14.75"h, 16"w, 9"d, 6.5lbs Provenance: From Donald and Renate Van Stone's Austin, Texas estate. Donald Van Stone served as the Regional Vice President of the First National Bank of Chicago from 1971-1984, a time in which the bank was expanding internationally. After assignments in Germany, Kenya, and Australia, the Van Stones moved to Manila, Philippines where they began amassing an impressive collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian art and artifacts, some of which will be offered in this auction.
