Southeast Asian carved merchant's chest/ storage trunk, the hinged top surmounted by pair of dueling mythical beasts, open interior with metal straps, the polychrome painted case profusely carved with scrolled foliate motifs, masks to corners, metal side handles and bands, rising on turned feet, approx 26"h, 32.75"w, 11.75"d Provenance: From Donald and Renate Van Stone's Austin, Texas estate. Donald Van Stone served as the Regional Vice President of the First National Bank of Chicago from 1971-1984, a time in which the bank was expanding internationally. After assignments in Germany, Kenya, and Australia, the Van Stones moved to Manila, Philippines where they began amassing an impressive collection of Chinese and Southeast Asian art and artifacts, some of which will be offered in this auction.
