Exceptional Spanish Baroque period parcel gilt four poster bed, 16th/ 17thc., carved wood with polychrome painted gesso, having ecclesiastical heraldic crest, depicting a Catholic bishop's coat of arms, comprised of a galero hat with six tassels on each side, centering Greek cross and shield, above headboard modeled as a tiered architectural colonnade with Solomonic columns, four substantial conforming posts, approx 24" circumference at column standard, terminating on pointed finials, rising on bulbous turned feet, exterior: approx 79"h, 103"l, 79"w, interior: approx 83.25"l, 58.75"w Provenance: Reportedly from the Castle of Talamanca near Barcelona, Spain. This medieval castle played an important role in the Battle of Talamanca, which marked the last victory of the Catalan army against the Bourbon troops during the War of Succession in 1714.
