Scarce WWII U.S. Bowie fighting knife built in response to the urgent U.S. military need for weapons with the advent of WWII, this example was constructed from an obsolete U.S. Model 1913 Cavalry Saber mfg. in 1918 by Landers. Frary & Clark (New Britain, Ct.)  also known as the "Patton Saber" as it was designed by then 2nd Lt., U.S. Army Cavalry, George S. Patton Jr., the M1913 swords were cut into three parts with only one of the three retaining the original handle, this knife includes the original saber handle making it more scarce, the 8.25" clip point blade with fuller at each side is marked at the left ricasso "L.F. & Co., flaming ordnance bomb, over 1918", the right ricasso marked "U.S. over an eagle head over No 11", a stacked three part metal and composite guard, steel bolster, the handle is checkered black composite with two screw pins, the pommel has a screw hole where the end of the M1913 guard was attached, the pommel angles downward, blade is silver tone with black spots, edge is good with some roughness at places, no apparent nicks, overall 14.5"l, 1lb.
