Lot description

Patinated bronze sculpture, "Saint Michael and Lucifer," signed in cast C. Umlauf (Charles Umlauf, American, active in Austin, Texas, 1911-1994), 1985, Founderia del Chiaro Pietrasanta foundry mark, rising on squared marble pedestal, bronze retaining original patina, loss to lower end of Lucifer's trident, bronze: approx 50"h, 38"w, 26"d, pedestal: approx 36.5"h, 21.25"w, 18.5"d, overall: approx 88.5"h Provenance: This sculpture was designed for Saint Michael's Academy in Austin, Texas. Charles Umlauf cast this scale model for a planned sculpture one and a half times this size, though this was never realized. As one of only four initial castings in this size, it was purchased by our consignor, a member of the school's Board of Directors, and lent to St. Michael's for display. Another of these initial four sculptures currently holds a prominent position as one of the most popular pieces at the Umlauf Sculpture Garden in downtown Austin. After reclaiming this piece from St. Michael's, our consignor commissioned Umlauf to create an additional casting to be displayed at their private residence. This sculpture has been exclusively displayed inside and retains its original patina.
