Lot description
Minimalist stainless steel sculpture, "High Energy Bar," signed in cast Walter De Maria (New York/ California, 1935-2013), numbered 73, dated 1966, approx 1.5"h, 14 1/8"w, 1.5"d, 9lbs NOTE: Our consignor purchased the work from Deborah Hay (New York, Texas) on April 8, 2022. This lot is accompanied by an original letter from Ms. Hay noting that the High Energy Bar (#73) was gifted to her by the artist in New York City during the mid-1960s. The original receipt from Ms. Hay to our consignor (buyer identification redacted) also accompanies the piece. Ms. Elizabeth Childress, director of the Walter De Maria Archive, provided scans of the original studio ledger page (the original residing with the Foundation) confirming Deborah Hay as owner of the High Energy Bar #73. I corresponded via email with her on 10/30/24, confirming all. The work was offered at Sotheby's Discovery Sale, October 3, 2022, Lot Number 523.
