(lot of 5) Vintage Bakelite and other plastic jewelry, including: (1) marbled green and brown necklace with graduated irregular-shaped beads, gilt metal clasp marked Eugene (Eugene Schultz, American, active in New York, 1911-1964), approx 20"l, (1) marbled green beaded stretch bracelet, lacking one bead at end, approx 1.25"w, (1) bracelet comprised of five linked rectangular metal plaques mounted with carved floriform Bakelite, approx 5/8"w, interior: 8.5"l, (1) chain-link Bakelite and metal bracelet, approx 1"w, 8"l, (1) stretch bracelet comprised of five discs with applied metal trim on worn elastic strings, each disc: approx 2"diam; 350.2 grams total Provenance: From the estate of Dorothy Jean McPhaul, whose small East Austin antique shop, Johnnie’s Antiques, has survived for generations despite rapid city expansion. McPhaul, a true lover of all things antique and a retired educator with a 40-year tenure at the LaGrange Public School system, personally collected African American memorabilia, jewelry, glassware, pottery, amongst other rare and fine antiques. Established by McPhaul’s grandfather, Simon Sidle, in 1918, Johnnie’s Antiques is among the last vintage properties on East 6th Street, and notable as one of the first black-owned businesses in Austin. After assuming proprietorship in 1999, Dorothy followed in the family tradition as a fixture of the Texas antique sale circuit.
