(lot of 6) Silver matchbox covers and vesta cases, including: (1) English sterling vesta case, c.1898, maker's mark C.C, Birmingham hallmarks, (1) English sterling vesta case, Smith & Bartlam, c.1942, Birmingham hallmarks, (1) Dutch .833 silver matchbox cover, with canal scene in relief, (1) American S. Kirk & Son sterling matchbox cover, engraved logo and date 1973, (1) American Napier sterling matchbook case, monogrammed FDS, covers not closing securely, together with (1) Prince lighter with silver (content unknown) wrap; largest: approx 2.5"l, 1 5/8"w, 4.54ozt total (weighable silver only) Provenance: From the estate of Dorothy Jean McPhaul, whose small East Austin antique shop, Johnnie’s Antiques, has survived for generations despite rapid city expansion. McPhaul, a true lover of all things antique and a retired educator with a 40-year tenure at the LaGrange Public School system, personally collected African American memorabilia, jewelry, glassware, pottery, amongst other rare and fine antiques. Established by McPhaul’s grandfather, Simon Sidle, in 1918, Johnnie’s Antiques is among the last vintage properties on East 6th Street, and notable as one of the first black-owned businesses in Austin. After assuming proprietorship in 1999, Dorothy followed in the family tradition as a fixture of the Texas antique sale circuit.
