Lot description

U.S. Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine, mfg.1882, .45-70 caliber, 22" barrel, single barrel band, blade front sight, the rear sight lacking operational parts, marked at left side of barrel near breech left near breech: "V, P, eagle, P", marked "L"at barrel top, breech block marked "U.S. Springfield Model 1873", lock plate marked with eagle next to "U.S. Springfield", faint outline of the inspector mark at left wrist, butt plate with port and marked "US" at top, metal is brown, wood dark with some dents and surface loss, action is good, bore is dark with visible rifling, SN 187282 *Note: Our consignor states this was purchased some years ago at a gun shop in Tucson, Arizona. The shop owner related that he had purchased the carbine from an elderly man whose Native American relative had originally used it on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation before the U.S. Army had removed the shell extractor.
