(lot of 8) Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) and Solon Borglum (Solon Hannibal Borglum, 1868-1922), plaster models prior to bronze, and papers from the archive from the estate of (Mary Montgomery Williams Borglum, 1874-1955), including: (1) Gutzon signed plaster sculpture sans head titled "The Martyr," as depicted with her head and executed in marble shown on page 13 of the 1914 Borglum Sculpture Exhibition at Columbia University, the catalog (copy attached), black finish, signed near base, intact with glue restorations, approx 21"h; (1) plaster "Female Nude Torso" by Solon Borglum after Solon's charcoal drawing dated 1919 (copy attached) in the possession of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, unsigned, approx 21"h; (1) Cowboy on Horseback, unsigned, likely by Solon Borglum, the sculpture appearing in the background of a photo in the Rapid City Journal, page 11 the Rapid City Journal on March 18, 1975 (copy attached), restoration to hat with chip, visible seams / restoration/ at horses legs, approx 25"h, 21.5"w; (1) letter datelined Stamford, Conn., April 29 (no year) to Emil (Emil Adolph Flick, 1894-1977), Borglum's ranch foreman and together with his wife Christine, listed as one of the "workers" on Mt. Rushmore, from Mrs. Boglum stating "Mr Borglum has been having a very hard time getting his money for Rushmore in last season's work....Lincoln on his way...keep up a little longer and all will be well...." (1) handwritten letter signed Lincoln Borglum (James Lincoln de la Mothe Borglum, 1912-1986), Lincoln was Gutzon's son and completed the Mt. Rushmore sculptures, letter undated on The Blackstone Hotel, Chicago letterhead, addressed to Emil, the letter with questions and would see him soon; 44lbs total Start Price: $1,000.00
