Bouillotte Lamps

Named for an 18th-century French card game, the bouillotte lamp is one of the most recognizable forms in antique lighting: a weighted bronze base, two or three candle arms, and a painted tole shade that slides down as the candles burn. Its enduring appeal is decorative — it reads as authentically French and drops into a library or console instantly. Value tracks material, age, and pairs. Gilt-bronze (ormolu) examples outperform gilt metal; genuine period and Empire pieces outperform later reproductions; and a matched pair outperforms two singles. Original tole shades in good paint, fine chasing, and marble bases all add. This is a niche but clean market — modest in absolute dollars but consistent, and the search term is uncompetitive, so a well-photographed pair reliably finds its decorator buyer.
